Die Band Memorial Day wurde im November 1992 als Death-Metal-Formation gegründet und spielte im Januar 1994 das erste Demo Incurable Emotions, von dem alle 500 Exemplare verkauft wurden, ein.

In der folgenden Zeit absolvierte die Band einige Konzerte in ganz Deutschland (z.B. München, Nürnberg, Kassel, Ludwigshafen usw.) und im März 1995 eine kurze Tour durch Polen. Anschließend bereitete man sich auf die Aufnahmen zur ersten CD Embark Hades im Juli 1995 vor, die im November `95 erschien und dann durch mehrere Auftritte mit bekannteren Acts wie Pyogenesis, Theatre Of Tragedy oder Blackeyed Blonde der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt wurde.

Nach der Unterzeichnung eines Plattenvertrages beim Deutschen Underground-Label MDD begaben sich Memorial Day im August `97 erneut ins Studio, um mit dem Produzenten Andy Classen ihr zweites Album Retired From The World aufzunehmen, das eine große Veränderung in ihrem Musik- und Gesangsstil aufweist. Im Gegensatz zur ersten CD verbreiteten das atmosphärische Keyboard, die melodischen Lead-Gitarren und der variablere Gesang eine düster-aggressive bis melancholische Stimmung.

Anfang 1999 löste sich aufgrund Zeitmangels einzelner Bandmitglieder Memorial Day vorerst auf, bevor man sich im Sommer 2000 zu einem spontanen Konzert in abgespeckter Besetzung wieder zusammenfand und einen radikalen Neuanfang beschloss.

Ende 2000 nahm die Band das Schreiben neuer Songs in Angriff, wobei man sich musikalisch noch weiter von den Metal- und Gothic-Wurzeln entfernt hat und verstärkt Rap- und Hardcore-Einflüsse sowie ein straighteres und rockigeres Rhythmusfundament den Songs zugrunde legt. Das Ergebnis dieser Entwicklung ist auf dem 2003 erschienenen dritten Longplayer zu hören, der nach der Band selbst benannt ist. Das aktuelle Line-Up besteht aus Tom Hein (Gesang), Christian Schwalme (Gitarre), Jürgen Werse (Bass) und Willi Foh (Schlagzeug).

Die Band Memorial Day ist im Metal-Bereich anzusiedeln, wobei ihre musikalische Bandbreite von atmosphärischen Keyboards und melodischen Lead-Gitarren über groovige Rhythmen bis hin zu schnellen und brutalen Riffattacken reicht. Obwohl die Wurzeln der Band im Death-Metal anzusiedeln sind, verbinden Memorial Day heutzutage verschiedenste Musik-Stile wie z.B. Gothic, Rock, Hardcore und sogar Rap zu einer teils düster-aggresiven, teils melancholischen Mixtur aus Wut, Schmerz und Verzweiflung. Der im Gegensatz zum ersten Album variablere Gesangsstil ermöglicht es der Band nun, die Intensität dieser Emotionen besser auszudrücken.

The band Memorial Day was founded in November 1992 as a Death-Metal band. After completing the line-up, writing the first songs and collecting the first live experiences at small underground concerts the band entered a studio in January 1994 at the first time to record their first demo-tape Incurable Emotions under low-budget-conditions that is sold out by 500 copies.

In the following time the band played a few concerts in southern Germany (for example Munich, Nürnberg and so on), but also in other German cities like Kassel, Ludwigshafen or abroad at an one and a half week lasting tour through Poland in March 1995. In the further time the band prepared for the recording of the first CD Embark Hades in July 1995 that was published in November `95 and than promoted on a lot of concerts with bands like Pyogenesis, Theatre Of Tragedy or Blackeyed Blonde.

After signing a record deal with the German Underground-Label MDD, Memorial Day entered the studio again in August `97 with Producer Andy Classen to record their second album Retired From The World, that shows a big change in their music and vocal style. In contrast to the first CD the atmospheric keyboards, the melodic lead-guitars und the more variable vocals spread a gloomy-aggressive to melancholic spirit.

In the beginning of 1999 Memorial Day split up because of lack of time of some band-members but made a re-union in summer of 2000 for a spontaneous gig with reduced line-up and resolved to a radical new beginning.

At the end of 2000 the band started to write new songs, musically departing further from their metal- and gothic-roots and integrating more rap and hardcore influences and straighter, rock-like rhythms. The result of this development you can hear on their third long player that is named like the band itself. The current line-up consists of Tom Hein (vocals), Christian Schwalme (guitar), Jürgen Werse (bass-guitar) und Willi Foh (drums).

Memorial Day can be categorized as a metal-band, whose musical spectrum encircles all from atmospheric keyboards and melodic lead-guitars over groovy rhythms to fast and brutal riff attacks. Although the roots of the band are lying in the Death-Metal-Genre, Memorial Day nowadays are connecting so different types of music like for example Gothic, Rock, Hardcore and even Rap to a partly dark and aggressive, partly melancholic mixture between hate, pain and despair. The more variable vocal style makes it possible now for the band to express better the intensity of these emotions.
